FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Have questions about your child's dental care? We've got answers.

When should my child first visit the dentist?

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends a first visit by age 1 or within 6 months of the first tooth erupting. Early visits help establish good oral health habits and allow us to monitor development. Many parents are surprised to learn how early this should happen!

How do you help anxious or scared children?

Our team is specially trained to work with nervous children. We use a gentle 'tell-show-do' approach, explaining everything in kid-friendly terms before we do it. We never rush or force treatment. We use distraction techniques, breaks, and a calm, supportive environment to help very anxious children. Most kids end up loving their visits!

How often should my child visit the dentist?

We recommend checkups every 6 months, just like adults. Regular visits help catch problems early, keep teeth clean, and reinforce good habits. Some children at higher risk for cavities may benefit from more frequent visits.

Are dental X-rays safe for children?

Yes! We use digital X-rays which emit up to 90% less radiation than traditional X-rays - about the same as a short airplane flight. We only take X-rays when necessary for proper diagnosis, and we use protective lead aprons.

What if my child has a dental emergency?

Call during office hours so our team can discuss your child's symptoms and available appointment options. For a knocked-out permanent tooth, try to place it back in the socket or keep it moist in milk, and seek timely dental care.

How can I prepare my child for their first dental visit?

Keep it positive! Read children's books about going to the dentist, play 'dentist' at home, and avoid using scary words. Don't share any negative dental experiences you may have had. Let us know if your child has any special concerns so we can be prepared. And remember — don't overprepare. Treat the visit casually to avoid putting your child on alert.

Do baby teeth really matter if they fall out anyway?

Yes — baby teeth matter much more than most parents realize. They hold the space for permanent teeth, guide proper jaw development, and play a key role in speech, nutrition, and confidence. When baby teeth are lost too early due to cavities or infection, it can lead to crowding, misalignment, and difficulty with speech and eating. Taking care of baby teeth is one of the best investments you can make in your child's long-term oral health.

Do you accept dental insurance for children?

We accept most major PPO dental insurance plans. Coverage varies by plan, so our team can help you review benefits and payment options. Ask about Medi-Cal/Denti-Cal availability for children.

Can siblings be seen at the same appointment?

Absolutely! We're happy to schedule siblings back-to-back or even simultaneously when possible. It can make the experience much more fun and less intimidating for younger kids to watch an older sibling go first.

Do you also see adults at Teddy Bear Dental Care?

Our pediatric office is focused on children, but our sister practice — Smiles of Moorpark in Suite E — is a full-service dental office for teens and adults. Both share the same doctors and team, so the whole family is in great hands under one roof.

Will you judge me or my child if their teeth aren't perfect?

Never. Our practice is built on a no-judgment, no-lecture philosophy. We're here to help, not to make you feel bad about where things stand today. Whatever the situation, we'll meet your child where they are and work together on a positive path forward.

My child brushes every day — so why do they still get cavities?

Great question! Brushing is essential, but cavities are influenced by many factors: diet (especially frequent snacking or sugary drinks), genetics, the bacteria naturally present in your child's mouth, and how well the back teeth are being reached. We'll help identify the specific factors for your child and create a personalized prevention plan.
