Children's dental needs change as they grow. Here's what to expect at each stage.
Infant Care
- Clean gums with a soft, damp cloth after feedings
- Schedule first dental visit when first tooth appears (around 6 months) or by age 1
- Avoid putting baby to bed with a bottle
- Begin using a tiny smear of fluoride toothpaste when teeth appear
Toddler Care
- Brush twice daily with a rice-grain sized amount of fluoride toothpaste
- Help your child brush until they develop good motor skills

Preschool Care
- Use a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste

Are dental X-rays safe for children?
Yes! We use digital X-rays which emit up to 90% less radiation than traditional X-rays - about the same as a short airplane flight. We only take X-rays when necessary for proper diagnosis, and we use protective lead aprons.
What if my child has a dental emergency?
Call during office hours so our team can discuss your child's symptoms and available appointment options. For a knocked-out permanent tooth, try to place it back in the socket or keep it moist in milk, and seek timely dental care.
How can I prepare my child for their first dental visit?
Keep it positive! Read children's books about going to the dentist, play 'dentist' at home, and avoid using scary words. Don't share any negative dental experiences you may have had. Let us know if your child has any special concerns so we can be prepared. And remember — don't overprepare. Treat the visit casually to avoid putting your child on alert.
Do baby teeth really matter if they fall out anyway?
Yes — baby teeth matter much more than most parents realize. They hold the space for permanent teeth, guide proper jaw development, and play a key role in speech, nutrition, and confidence. When baby teeth are lost too early due to cavities or infection, it can lead to crowding, misalignment, and difficulty with speech and eating. Can siblings be seen at the same appointment?
Absolutely! We're happy to schedule siblings back-to-back or even simultaneously when possible. It can make the experience much more fun and less intimidating for younger kids to watch an older sibling go first.

Our pediatric office is focused on children, but our sister practice — Smiles of Moorpark in Suite E — is a full-service dental office for teens and adults. Both share the same doctors and team, so the whole family is in great hands under one roof.

Great question! Brushing is essential, but cavities are influenced by many factors: diet (especially frequent snacking or sugary drinks), genetics, the bacteria naturally present in your child's mouth, and how well the back teeth are being reached. We'll help identify the specific factors for your child and create a personalized prevention plan.
